Jordan'sLaw
In 2019, Representative Latvala introduced legislation in honor of 2-year-old Largo toddler, Jordan Belliveau who died in 2018 from head trauma inflicted by his birth mother. He tirelessly pursued legislation to improve the foster care system by providing more support and transparency. Although the Florida House passed the bill unanimously, the Senate refused to take up the bill. Unwilling to accept that additional children could be hurt without these necessary changes to Florida's foster care system he reintroduced the legislation in 2020. He worked diligently with industry experts to craft and pass Jordan's Law, The bill, now signed by the Governor, will decrease the caseload of case managers, improve and streamline communications between agencies, and increase training for parents, law enforcement, and caseworkers.
